Today In early morning around 8 a.m., NASA's two female astronauts Nichole Ayers and Anne McClain are performing the fifth-ever all-female spacewalk outside the International Space Station (ISS).

Here's what we know about the event:

- Spacewalk Details: The spacewalk began at 8 a.m. EDT (1200 GMT) and is expected to last around 6.5 hours.

- Tasks: Ayers and McClain will relocate a space station communications antenna and install a mounting bracket to prepare for the installation of additional solar arrays, known as IROSA (International Space Station Rollout Solar Arrays).

- Experience: This will be McClain's third spacewalk and Ayers' first.

Today’s spacewalk will be the third for McClain, the first for Ayers and the 275th overall in the history of the ISS. Both women arrived at the orbiting lab on March 16 on SpaceX’s Crew-10 mission.

Some notable all-female spacewalks in the past include:

- Christina Koch and Jessica Meir: Conducted the first all-female spacewalk in October 2019, replacing a failed battery charge-discharge unit.

- Jasmin Moghbeli and Loral O'Hara: Performed the fourth all-female spacewalk in November 2023, replacing a bearing in a solar array joint.
